What We Learned

On Wednesday April 7, 1999, the Grade 5 class embarked on a whirlwind adventure. We sent a letter to 15 people we knew (grandparents, friends, teachers), asking them to send back their location and to forward our letter on.

The response was absolutely overwhelming! We received 9 000 messages within the first week alone. They were coming in at a rate of about 150 per hour!!

It was at this point that the class decided we would have to block our Email address at Glinx, in order to stop the flooding. With over 4 000 messages sitting in the Inbox, we were unable to keep up with the responses. As of April 16, our address was officially cancelled.

As of June 11th, we had logged well over 18,000 responses! This number includes email, FAXes and phone calls,"snail mail", guestbook entries and even some LIVE visitors from afar. The information we received is incredible and up-to-date! We wish we could thank everyone individually but that is impossible therefore, thank you all who responded, for your time and consideration. We appreciate your help immensely.

Thanks also go out to our principal and secretary, who have been kept busy answering phone calls and noting locations. We have also been fortunate to have several volunteers who are helping us and, Glinx has been more then patient throughout the project.

Although the project is now over, please feel free to sign our guestbook. We will continue to sort through our responses and update our results at this site.

This experiment has had many positive spinoffs. Besides integrating Technology with the Social Studies and Language Arts programs in Grade 5, the students have:

- become more adept with keyboarding and webpage work

- read Email and discussed issues regarding the Internet (use of/and Safety)

- read and discussed several articles written in various papers about the project and generally have become more critically aware of the role of media

- spelled, charted and mapped locations

- learned interesting facts and made conclusions

- done mathematical calculations, read and created graphs and word problems based on the results

-participated actively in interviews and decision-making about the project

The upcoming grade 5 class will continue the project in the fall by updating the locations lists and doing more in-depth research on various places.

Again, many thanks to all participants. We hope we didn't inconvenience anyone too much.
